about

Spills Part 1 is the first solo release of singer Robyn Haddon, and is an experiment in songwriting with electronics, vocal processing and group singing. This project has been supported by Yorkshire Sound Women Network’s Permission to Play programme.

Live singing is captured and then transformed with effects and edits, and sometimes the vocal results are re-emulated by Haddon acapella back into the track. Haddon enjoys post-rationalising the recordings of free-form improvisation and first-takes, editing and knitting together the bank of sound that is produced, and feeling through the inevitable glitches and colouring-outside-the-lines that occurs.

Key to the Spills sensibility is the complicity of other voices. In June 2023, Haddon ran an experimental vocal workshop, inviting singers to take part in exercises that included a DAW as a “member of the choir.” The tracks Listen Book and Our Waters capture the playful energy of the workshop and feature the voices of the participants.

In Footnote, Haddon reads extracts from Hydrofeminism: Or, On Becoming a Body of Water by cultural theorist Astrida Neimanis. To feel vocal sounds as an elusive, effluvial bio-material, like water, is an important conceptual tool for how Haddon approaches the group singing workshops. Field recordings of what the artist feels are “my waters” also feature in the track.

With enormous thanks to the group workshop singers - Veronica Maxwell, Lucy Vann, Ruth Webber and Bethany Winter, and to Lucy Woolley at Yorkshire Sound Women Network.
